How to Apply for a Kentucky Driver's License

3 min read

Getting a driver's license in Kentucky involves several steps that depend on your age, driving experience, and the type of license you're seeking. Here's everything you need to know to get started with the application process through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a standard Kentucky driver's license, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Be a Kentucky resident
  • Have a valid Social Security number

Applicants under 18 must fulfill the requirements of Kentucky’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, which includes obtaining a learner’s permit and completing a driving log.

Required Documents

At the time of application, you must present the following:

  • One proof of identity (birth certificate or valid passport)
  • One proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub)
  • Two proofs of Kentucky residency (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.)
  • If under 18, a School Compliance Verification Form (signed within 60 days)
  • If changing your name, legal documentation such as a marriage certificate

For those opting for a REAL ID-compliant license, additional documentation is required. What You Need to Know About Kentucky REAL ID explains this in detail.

Applying for a Permit (Under 18)

Teens must start with a learner’s permit, which requires passing a written knowledge and vision test. You can find more information at Obtaining a Kentucky Learner's Permit.

Applicants must hold a permit for at least 180 days and complete 60 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), logged in a driving practice log. Refer to Practice Driving Log Requirements in Kentucky.

Taking the Written and Vision Tests

All applicants must pass a vision screening and a written knowledge test. Prepare for the written exam by reviewing traffic laws and practicing with tools like Kentucky Driver's License Practice Tests.

Vision requirements include a minimum of 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without correction.

Road Skills Test

Once all prerequisites are met (including permit holding period and practice hours for minors), you can schedule the road test. This must be done at a Kentucky State Police testing site. Details on test requirements can be found at What to Expect on the Kentucky Driving Skills Test.

Fees and Payment

Standard driver's license fees in Kentucky are typically $48 for an 8-year license. Additional fees apply for REAL ID versions or testing retakes. Learn more at Understanding Kentucky DMV Fees.

Additional Considerations

  • If you’re transferring a license from another state, bring your out-of-state license and complete the residency documentation.
  • For those with a license expired for more than one year, retesting may be required.
  • License renewals and replacements follow a different process, which you can review at Replacing a Lost or Stolen Kentucky Driver's License.

Applying for a Kentucky driver's license is a structured process, but with the right preparation and documents, it's a manageable task for both first-time drivers and those new to the state.
