Practice Driving Log Requirements in Kentucky

3 min read

Kentucky's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program mandates that teen drivers gain adequate on-road experience under supervision before obtaining an intermediate license. One of the most critical parts of this process is completing a practice driving log.

Who Needs a Driving Log?

Anyone under the age of 18 who has a Kentucky learner's permit is required to maintain a driving log. This is a necessary step before applying for an intermediate license. The purpose of the log is to ensure that young drivers have had sufficient practice under various driving conditions.

Required Driving Hours

Permit holders must complete at least 60 hours of supervised driving. These hours must include:

  • At least 10 hours of night driving
  • All driving must be under the supervision of a licensed driver aged 21 or older

The hours must be spread out to give the driver a range of experiences, including residential, highway, and city driving.

Logging the Hours

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet provides a Practice Driving Log and Verification Form that must be completed accurately and submitted when applying for the intermediate license. This form includes:

  • Date of the drive
  • Start and end times
  • Total minutes/hours driven
  • Type of driving conditions
  • Supervisor’s signature

Who Can Supervise?

Only a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old can supervise the permit holder. This can be a parent, legal guardian, or another adult authorized by the parent or guardian.

When and Where to Submit the Log

The completed driving log must be turned in at the time of the road skills test, which is scheduled through the Kentucky State Police. If the log is incomplete or falsified, the applicant will not be permitted to take the test.

Additional Permit Stage Requirements

In addition to the driving log, permit holders must:

  • Hold their permit for at least 180 days
  • Not incur any moving violations during the permit period
  • Complete a driver education program, such as Kentucky's State Traffic School if required
