Enrolling in Kentucky's State Traffic School

3 min read

Kentucky's State Traffic School (STS) offers eligible drivers an opportunity to address minor traffic violations, avoid points on their driving record, and potentially prevent increases in insurance premiums. Understanding the enrollment process and requirements is crucial to take full advantage of this program.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate in Kentucky's STS, drivers must meet specific conditions:

  • Valid Driver's License: You must possess a valid Kentucky driver's license at the time of the citation.
  • Minor Traffic Violations: The offense should be a minor traffic violation; serious offenses requiring mandatory license suspension are not eligible.
  • No Recent STS Attendance: You must not have attended STS within the past 12 months.
  • Court Referral: Enrollment is only possible through a referral from the Kentucky District or Federal court where the violation occurred.
  • Non-Commercial Drivers: Holders of Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) are not eligible for STS.

It's essential to ensure your address on file is current, as notifications and instructions will be sent to the address listed on your driver's license.

Enrollment Process

  1. Court Referral: After a traffic violation, the court may refer you to STS as part of your sentencing.
  2. Notification: The Division of Driver Licensing (DDL) will mail an enrollment letter to your address with detailed instructions.
  3. Enrollment: Follow the instructions promptly. You must enroll and complete the course within 30 days of the referral to avoid license suspension.

Failure to complete the course as directed can result in the suspension of your driving privileges.

  • Prevents Points: No points will be assessed on your driving record for the violation.

For CDL holders, the violation will still appear on the driving record, even after completing STS.
