Vehicle Registration Fees

Standard Fees

Annual Registration Renewal: $21

Lien Filing Fee: $22
Duplicate Title: $6

VIN Inspection: $5 (required for out-of-state vehicles)
Late Lien Filing Penalty: $2
Mailing Fee for Online Renewals: $2 per vehicle

Road Usage Tax

Kentucky imposes a 6% road usage tax on the retail price of a vehicle, calculated based on either the purchase price or 90% of the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). This tax is collected during the initial registration of the vehicle.

Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Fees

Effective January 1, 2025:

Electric Vehicles (including plug-in hybrids): $126
Electric Motorcycles: $63
Hybrid Vehicles (non-plug-in): Fee eliminated

These fees are due at the time of initial registration and during each annual renewal. They are intended to offset reduced gas tax revenues and contribute to road maintenance and construction.

Driver's License and ID Fees

Standard and REAL ID Credentials

Kentucky offers both four-year and eight-year credential options:

Four-Year Credential: Half the cost of an eight-year credential
Eight-Year Credential: Full cost (specific amounts vary)

Note: REAL ID credentials are only available for eight-year terms for Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders.

Additional Fees

Replacement or Update (Name/Address Change): $15
Learner's Permit Renewal: $15 (standard), $18 (REAL ID)
Vision Screening: Required for all renewals starting January 1, 2025; available at no cost at Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Driver Licensing Regional Offices or through approved providers
