How to Register a Vehicle in Kentucky

3 min read

Registering a vehicle in Kentucky involves several steps, depending on whether the vehicle is new, used, or being transferred from another state. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) manages vehicle registration through County Clerk offices.

Where to Register

All vehicle registrations in Kentucky are handled at the County Clerk’s office in the county where you reside. You must appear in person with the required documents.

To find your local County Clerk’s office and their hours, visit the official KYTC County Clerk listing or use this resource on Finding Kentucky DMV Locations and Hours.

Documents You’ll Need

To register your vehicle, bring the following documents:

  • Proof of ownership (original title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin for new vehicles)
  • Completed Form TC 96-182 (Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title/Registration)
  • Photo ID (driver's license or state-issued ID)
  • Proof of Kentucky insurance
  • Vehicle inspection (if vehicle is from out of state)
  • Paid sales tax receipt or proof of exemption
  • Registration fee payment

Use Kentucky DMV Forms for accessing Form TC 96-182 and other required paperwork.

Vehicle Inspection Requirements

Out-of-state vehicles must undergo a one-time physical inspection by the sheriff’s department. The inspection checks the vehicle identification number (VIN) and ensures the vehicle is roadworthy.

Fees and Payment Options

Registration fees in Kentucky vary based on the type of vehicle, its weight, and applicable taxes. Passenger vehicle registration is typically $21 annually. You may also owe usage tax, calculated as 6% of the vehicle’s value unless already paid.

For a breakdown of fees, refer to Understanding Kentucky DMV Fees. Payment methods accepted at most County Clerk offices are detailed here: Payment Methods Accepted by Kentucky DMV.

Sales Tax and Usage Tax

You’ll be required to pay a 6% usage tax on the retail price of the vehicle. If you purchased the vehicle from a Kentucky dealer, they usually handle this tax. If bought from a private party or out-of-state, you must pay the tax at the time of registration.

Special Cases

Transferring a Vehicle from Another State

If you're a new Kentucky resident, you must register your out-of-state vehicle within 15 days of establishing residency. Along with standard documents, provide your current out-of-state title and registration. The vehicle inspection by the sheriff is mandatory.
