How to Change Your Name on a Kentucky Driver's License

3 min read

If you've legally changed your name due to marriage, divorce, or court order, Kentucky law requires you to update your driver's license within 10 days. Here's how to complete the process smoothly.

Step 1: Update Your Name with the Social Security Administration (SSA)

Before visiting the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), ensure your name change is reflected in SSA records. You'll need to provide:

After submitting, wait at least 48 hours for the SSA to update your records. A confirmation letter or updated Social Security card will serve as proof.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

When applying for a name change on your Kentucky driver's license, bring the following:

  • Proof of name change: Certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order
  • Proof of updated Social Security record: Updated Social Security card or SSA confirmation letter
  • Current Kentucky driver's license or ID
  • Proof of residency: Required if your address has also changed (e.g., utility bill, bank statement)

For a REAL ID, additional documentation may be necessary. Refer to the Valid Proof Documents guide for details.

Step 3: Apply for a Duplicate License

You can apply for a duplicate license reflecting your new name either in person or by mail.

In Person

Visit any Driver Licensing Regional Office. Bring all required documents and be prepared to pay the $15 fee.

By Mail

Complete the Driver License/ID Card Renewal or Replacement Form and mail it with copies of your documents (do not send originals) and a check or money order for $15 to the address specified on the form.

Note: Processing times may vary. If you need your updated license promptly, applying in person is recommended.

Additional Considerations

  • Address Change: If your address has changed, update it simultaneously. Provide one proof of residency document.
  • REAL ID: If you wish to upgrade to a REAL ID, additional documentation is required. Visit drive.ky.gov for more information.
