Name Change Procedures for Kentucky Driver's License
If you've recently changed your name due to marriage, divorce, adoption, or a legal court order, updating your Kentucky driver's license is an important step. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) requires all name changes to be reflected on your driver’s license to keep your identification documents current and accurate.
When to Update Your Name
Kentucky law mandates that a name change be reported to the Kentucky Division of Driver Licensing within 10 days of the legal change. This ensures your identification matches other legal documents, especially if you're applying for services like Kentucky REAL ID.
What You Need
To process a name change, you must visit a KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Office in person. You cannot change your name online or by mail.
Bring the following documentation:
- Certified proof of the name change (one of the following):
- Marriage certificate
- Divorce decree
- Court order
- Your current Kentucky driver's license
- Proof of identity and lawful status (e.g., valid U.S. passport or birth certificate)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2)
- Two proofs of Kentucky residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
All documents must be original or certified copies. Photocopies are not accepted.
Process at the DMV
- Visit a Kentucky DMV location and check in for a driver’s license update.
- Submit the required documents listed above.
- Pay the required fee. Name change fees vary depending on whether you are renewing or requesting a duplicate license. You can review the current fees at the Kentucky DMV Fees page.
- A new license will be issued reflecting your updated name.
Real ID Considerations
If you’re upgrading to a Real ID at the same time, you must provide all standard Real ID documentation, in addition to your name change documentation. For many, this is a good time to apply for a Kentucky driver’s license with Real ID credentials.
Updating Other DMV Records
After updating your license, be sure to update your vehicle title and registration to reflect the name change. The process is similar and may require a visit to your local County Clerk’s office.
Additional Tips
- Make an appointment if possible to reduce wait times. Use the Kentucky DMV appointment system.
- If your name change occurs close to your renewal period, consider completing both tasks in one visit.
- If your license was lost or stolen, follow the replacement process before updating your name.
Keeping your information current with the DMV ensures your records are accurate and your identity is protected.
