Updating Your Address with the Illinois DMV
Keeping your address current with the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) is required by law and helps ensure you receive important notifications about your license, registration, and other DMV-related services. Whether you're moving within Illinois or into the state, updating your address is a straightforward process.
Who Needs to Update Their Address?
Illinois residents must notify the SOS within 10 days of moving to a new address if they hold:
- A valid Illinois driver's license or ID card
- An Illinois vehicle registration
- Both of the above
Even if you're only changing apartments or moving down the street, this requirement still applies.
How to Change Your Address with the Illinois DMV
There are different methods available depending on what you're updating—driver's license/ID or vehicle registration.
For Driver’s License or State ID
You can update your address online, by mail, or in person:
- Online: Visit the Illinois Address Change system and submit your updated information.
- By Mail: Complete the Driver's License/State ID Card Address Change form and send it to the Secretary of State office.
- In Person: Visit a local SOS facility. Bring your current license/ID and a document proving your new address.
Note: The address change does not automatically generate a new license or ID card. To obtain a card with your new address, you must apply for a duplicate license.

Fees for Updating Address
There is no fee for simply changing your address in SOS records. However, if you request a new driver’s license, ID card, or vehicle registration with your updated address printed, standard replacement fees apply.
