Illinois CDL Pre-Trip and Skills Test Changes for 2025

3 min read

Effective September 1, 2024, the Illinois Secretary of State implemented significant updates to the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) testing process. These changes aim to streamline the evaluation of commercial drivers' skills and align Illinois's testing procedures with federal standards.

Updated Pre-Trip Inspection Protocol

The pre-trip inspection component has reverted to the standards in place prior to 2015. Key modifications include:

  • Checklist Usage: Applicants are now permitted to use a standardized checklist during the inspection process. This tool assists in ensuring all necessary components are evaluated systematically.
  • Examiner Prompts: Test administrators are authorized to prompt applicants during the inspection. This change facilitates a more interactive assessment, allowing examiners to guide applicants through the process effectively.

These adjustments are designed to enhance the accuracy and consistency of the pre-trip inspection evaluation, ensuring that drivers are thoroughly prepared for real-world vehicle assessments.

Streamlined Basic Control Skills Test

The basic control skills test has been refined to focus on four critical maneuvers:

  1. Forward Stop: Demonstrating the ability to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop at a designated point.
  2. Straight-Line Backing: Reversing the vehicle in a straight path within a defined lane.
  3. Forward Offset Tracking: Navigating the vehicle forward into an offset lane, simulating real-world docking scenarios.
  4. Reverse Offset Backing: Backing the vehicle into an offset lane, testing the driver's precision and control.

By concentrating on these fundamental skills, the revised test aims to assess the essential competencies required for safe and effective vehicle operation.

Scheduling and Additional Requirements

Applicants must schedule their CDL skills tests through the Illinois Secretary of State's appointment system. It's important to note that:

  • A Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) must be held for a minimum of 14 days before taking the skills test.
  • Applicants 75 years of age or older are required to complete the full pre-trip, skills, and road tests, regardless of prior CDL status.
  • No recording devices are permitted during the testing process to maintain the integrity of the examination.
