Illinois Vehicle Registration Renewal Options

3 min read

Illinois vehicle owners must renew their vehicle registration annually to remain in compliance with state law. The Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) offers several convenient renewal methods, each with specific requirements and timelines.

Renewal Notice and Timing

The Illinois SOS typically sends a renewal notice about 60 days before your registration expires. This notice includes your registration ID and PIN—information necessary for online or kiosk renewal. Even if you do not receive a notice, you are still responsible for renewing on time.

Passenger vehicle registration in Illinois expires annually and must be renewed before the end of the expiration month to avoid late fees.

Renewal Methods

1. Online Renewal

The fastest and most convenient option is online renewal through the Illinois SOS website. To renew online, you’ll need:

  • Registration ID and PIN (found on your renewal notice)
  • Insurance information
  • Payment method (credit/debit card)

After completing the transaction, you'll receive your new registration and sticker by mail within approximately 5 to 10 business days.

2. In-Person Renewal

You may renew at an SOS facility if you prefer handling the transaction face-to-face. This is ideal if:

  • Your registration is expired beyond the grace period
  • You didn’t receive a renewal notice
  • You have unpaid fees or fines

Visit one of the Illinois DMV Locations and bring your renewal notice or previous registration card, ID, and payment.

3. Mail-In Renewal

Mailing your payment and renewal stub to the address on your notice is another option. Include:

  • The completed renewal form
  • Check or money order payable to the Illinois Secretary of State
  • Allow at least 30 days for processing

4. Kiosk Renewal

Self-service kiosks are located in select SOS facilities and retail locations. These kiosks allow for quick registration renewal and immediate sticker printing. Bring your renewal notice or key information like your license plate number and VIN.

Fees and Late Penalties

Standard passenger vehicle registration in Illinois currently costs $151. If your registration expires, you are subject to a $20 late fee. Vehicles may also be subject to local or county taxes, especially in Cook County and the City of Chicago.

For more details on fees, check out the Illinois DMV Fees for Licenses, Plates, and Permits.

Emissions Testing Requirement

In certain counties, including Cook and the collar counties, emissions testing is required before you can renew your registration. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) will notify you if testing is needed.

What to Do If You’ve Moved

If your address has changed, update your records with the SOS before renewing your registration. Use this guide to update your address: Updating Your Address with the Illinois DMV

Specialty Plates and Other Considerations

Owners of specialty or personalized plates must also renew annually, sometimes with additional fees. For more, see Illinois License Plate Options and Renewal Process.
