How to Get Your First Illinois Driver’s License

3 min read

Getting your first Illinois driver’s license is a major milestone that involves multiple steps, depending on your age and experience. The Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) oversees this process and ensures that all new drivers meet specific requirements to promote safe driving habits.

Eligibility Requirements

In Illinois, the minimum age to apply for a standard Class D driver’s license is 18. However, teens aged 15 to 17 may begin driving under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, starting with an instruction permit.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a legal Illinois resident
  • Provide acceptable identification and proof of residency
  • Pass required vision, written, and road tests
  • Complete a driver education course (if under 18)

Step 1: Instruction Permit

If you are under 18, you must first obtain an instruction permit, also called a learner’s permit. You must:

  • Be at least 15 years old
  • Be enrolled in a state-approved driver education course
  • Pass the vision and written knowledge tests
  • Present acceptable ID documents

The permit is valid for 2 years and must be held for a minimum of 9 months before applying for a license. Learn more about Illinois Instruction Permit Requirements for Teens and Adults.

Step 2: Behind-the-Wheel Practice

Teens must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice (including 10 hours at night) while holding the permit. A parent or legal guardian must verify these hours.

Step 3: Driver Education

Drivers under 18 must complete an approved driver education program that includes classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. Learn about Illinois Driver Education Course Options.

Step 4: Apply for a Driver’s License

After fulfilling the above requirements, applicants can schedule a road test. Bring the following documents to the DMV:

  • Proof of identity (birth certificate, passport)
  • Proof of residency (bank statements, utility bills)
  • Instruction permit (if applicable)
  • Completion certificate from driver education (under 18)
  • 50-hour driving log (under 18)

Step 5: Pass Required Tests

You’ll need to pass the following:

  • Vision Test: Minimum 20/40 vision in one or both eyes
  • Written Test: Covers traffic signs, rules, and safety laws. Study using the Illinois Rules of the Road 2025 Overview.
  • Road Test: Assesses your ability to drive safely and follow traffic laws

Step 6: Receive Your License

If you pass all exams, you’ll be issued a temporary paper license. The official plastic card will be mailed to you. Drivers under 21 receive a vertical license that is valid until 3 months after their 21st birthday.
