Illinois REAL ID Requirements and Deadlines
Starting May 7, 2025, Illinois residents aged 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities, such as military bases and nuclear power plants. This guide outlines the requirements, deadlines, and steps to obtain a REAL ID in Illinois.
What Is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID is a federally compliant form of identification that meets enhanced security standards set by the REAL ID Act of 2005. In Illinois, a REAL ID-compliant card features a gold star in the upper right corner. While obtaining a REAL ID is optional, it becomes essential for specific federal purposes starting May 7, 2025. If you have a valid U.S. passport, military ID, or other TSA-accepted identification, you may continue to use those documents instead of obtaining a REAL ID.
Who Needs a REAL ID?
You will need a REAL ID if you plan to:
- Board domestic flights within the United States.
- Enter secure federal facilities, such as military bases or nuclear power plants.
A standard Illinois driver's license or ID card will remain valid for driving, voting, and general identification purposes. If you do not require access to federal facilities or domestic air travel, a REAL ID is not necessary.
