Renewing Your Illinois Driver’s License or State ID

3 min read

Illinois residents must renew their driver's license or state ID regularly to remain in compliance with state law. The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office oversees the renewal process and offers several options for residents to complete their renewals based on age, type of license, and eligibility status.

When to Renew

Illinois driver's licenses are typically valid for four years and expire on the driver’s birthday. Renewal notices are mailed approximately 60 to 90 days before expiration. You should not wait to receive a notice to begin the process—especially if you need a REAL ID or have special requirements.

State IDs also expire every four years, though seniors over age 65 receive free, non-expiring ID cards.

Renewal Eligibility and Options

You may renew your Illinois driver’s license or ID:

  • Online through the Safe Driver Renewal program (if eligible)
  • By mail, for selected individuals
  • In person at a Secretary of State facility

Illinois DMV Appointment and Walk-In Policies outlines when and how to visit a facility.

To renew online, you must be eligible under the Safe Driver program, meaning you have a clean driving record and meet age and vision criteria. Online renewals are not available for those with name or address changes, new medical restrictions, or license suspensions.

Documents You’ll Need

If renewing in person, bring the following:

  • Current Illinois driver’s license or state ID
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Two documents proving Illinois residency

These documents are especially important if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID. Review Illinois REAL ID Requirements and Deadlines to understand the differences and what extra documentation is needed.

Renewal Fees

As of 2025, the following fees apply:

  • Driver’s license (ages 21–68): $30
  • State ID (under 65): $20
  • State ID (65 and older): Free
  • REAL ID upgrade (if not at renewal): $5

Vision and Written Tests

Most drivers renewing in person will be required to pass a vision screening. Those 75 and older must also take a written and driving exam during every renewal. For more information on testing, consult Illinois Rules of the Road 2025 Overview.

Special Situations

  • Out-of-State Residents: You can request a temporary extension by contacting the Secretary of State’s Office.
  • Military Personnel: Active duty members and their dependents have up to 120 days after discharge to renew their license without penalty.
