Michigan Name Change on DMV Records

If you've changed your name due to marriage, divorce, adoption, or a court order, it's essential to update your Michigan DMV records to reflect your legal name. The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) requires you to update your name on your driver’s license, ID card, vehicle title, and registration promptly after a legal name change.

Before you can update your DMV records, you must have official documentation that verifies your new legal name. Acceptable documents include:

  • Certified marriage certificate
  • Divorce decree that states the name change
  • Court order authorizing the name change
  • Amended birth certificate

All documents must be original or certified copies. Photocopies or notarized copies are not accepted.

Update Your Social Security Record First

Michigan law mandates that your name change must be recorded with the Social Security Administration (SSA) before the SOS will process your DMV name update. Visit your local SSA office or apply by mail using Form SS-5, available on the Social Security Administration's website. Wait at least 24–48 hours after your SSA record is updated before visiting the SOS.

Changing Your Name on Your Driver’s License or State ID

You must visit a Michigan Secretary of State office in person to update the name on your driver’s license or state ID. You cannot complete this transaction online or by mail.

Bring the following:

  • Proof of legal name change (e.g., marriage certificate, court order)
  • Updated Social Security card or verification that the SSA has processed your name change
  • Current Michigan driver’s license or ID

Updating Vehicle Title and Registration

After changing your name on your license, update your name on your vehicle title and registration. This must also be done in person.

You’ll need:

  • Current vehicle title
  • Proof of legal name change
  • Michigan driver’s license or ID showing your new name

Timing and Processing

Name change updates are typically processed the same day if all documentation is in order. However, it may take 2–3 weeks to receive your updated license or title in the mail. Make sure your mailing address is current to avoid delivery issues.

Failure to update your name with the SOS can lead to discrepancies in your records, which might affect insurance claims, voter registration, and legal documents. Prompt action ensures compliance and protects your identity.
