Michigan Address Change on License
If you’ve recently moved within the state or changed your mailing address, Michigan law requires you to update the address on your driver license. The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) mandates that drivers report any address change within 10 days. Failing to do so may lead to penalties or missed communications about your license status, renewal notices, or vehicle registration.
Who Must Change Their Address
All Michigan residents holding a driver license, state ID, or vehicle registration must update their address with the SOS when:
- Moving to a new residence within Michigan
- Changing mailing addresses separate from their residence
- Returning to Michigan from another state if the Michigan license is still valid
Methods to Update Your Address
You can change your address through one of three main channels:
1. Online
Visit the Michigan Secretary of State Online Services portal. To use this method, you'll need:
- Your Michigan driver license or ID number
- The last four digits of your Social Security number
- Your new address
Online updates are processed instantly, and you may choose whether to order a new physical license with the updated address.
2. By Mail
You can submit an address change by mailing a completed Change of Address form. While the address is updated in the system, a new card is not automatically mailed unless requested.
Send your completed form to:
Michigan Department of State
PO Box 30764
Lansing, MI 48909-8264
3. In Person
You may also visit a local Michigan SOS office to update your address. Bring your driver license and any proof of the new address (such as a utility bill or lease agreement).
Cost of Updating Address
There is no fee to update your address with the SOS. However, if you choose to receive a new license or state ID card with the updated address printed on it, a replacement fee applies. Refer to the Michigan DMV Fees and Payment Options for the most current charges.
Updating Vehicle Registration Address
Changing the address on your license does not automatically update the address on your vehicle registration. You must update it separately through the same SOS online portal or during your next registration renewal.
What Happens After You Update
Once the address is updated:
- If you ordered a new license or ID card, expect delivery within 2-3 weeks
- Your new address will be reflected in all SOS records
- You remain in compliance with Michigan driving laws
