Michigan Driver License Eligibility

3 min read

Before applying for a driver license in Michigan, it's essential to understand who qualifies and what requirements must be met. Eligibility varies based on age, residency status, and license type.

Age Requirements

Michigan's licensing system starts with the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program for teens and transitions to full licenses for adults.

  • Teens (14 years, 8 months and older): Eligible to apply for a Level 1 Learner's License through the Michigan Graduated Licensing Program.
  • Adults (18 and older): May apply directly for a regular driver license, bypassing the GDL program.

To qualify for a Michigan license, you must:

  • Be a resident of Michigan or have established residency
  • Be legally present in the United States (U.S. citizens and non-citizens with valid immigration status)

Temporary visitors are not eligible for a Michigan driver license.

Required Documentation

Applicants must present proof of:

  1. Legal presence in the U.S.
  2. Michigan residency (two documents)
  3. Identity and date of birth
  4. Social Security number (or a letter of ineligibility if not eligible)

A full list of acceptable documents is available in the Required Documents for Michigan License.

License Eligibility for Non-U.S. Citizens

Non-U.S. citizens with valid visas or immigration documentation can obtain a Michigan license if they meet all documentation requirements. The license expiration will coincide with the end date of legal presence.

Eligibility for Learner’s Permit

Teens beginning the GDL process must:

  • Be at least 14 years and 8 months old
  • Enroll in Segment 1 of driver education
  • Pass a vision test and meet physical standards

Details are available at How to Get a Michigan Learner Permit.

Vision and Physical Standards

Every applicant must pass a vision screening at the Secretary of State office. Those with visual impairments may be required to provide a report from an eye care specialist. Additionally, physical conditions that might affect driving must be disclosed.

License Suspensions and Restrictions

Applicants currently under suspension or revocation in Michigan or any other state are not eligible until those sanctions are cleared. Restrictions may also apply for health-related reasons or court-imposed limitations.
