Steps to Get Your First Michigan License

3 min read

If you're ready to drive in Michigan for the first time, you'll need to go through a specific licensing process regulated by the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS). This includes eligibility checks, permits, required documents, and testing procedures.

Determine Eligibility

To apply for a Michigan driver’s license, you must meet specific age and residency requirements. Generally, applicants must be at least 16 years old and meet the conditions of the state’s Graduated Licensing Program. Residents must also provide proof of Michigan residency and legal presence in the U.S.

Check detailed Michigan Driver License Eligibility before starting the application.

Start with a Learner's Permit (Level 1 License)

For applicants under 18, Michigan requires a Level 1 learner's license under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. This involves:

  • Completing Segment 1 of a driver education course
  • Passing a vision screening and written knowledge test
  • Presenting identity documents

Collect Required Documents

You’ll need several documents to verify identity, residency, Social Security number, and legal status. This may include:

  • Birth certificate or valid passport
  • Social Security card or tax form
  • Two proofs of Michigan residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)

Check the Required Documents for Michigan License list to ensure everything is in order before visiting a SOS office.

Pass the Knowledge and Vision Tests

You must pass the written knowledge test and a vision screening at the SOS office. Teens typically take the knowledge test after completing Segment 1 of driver education. Adults over 18 must schedule and pass the written test independently.

Practice Driving (Level 1 and 2)

Level 1 license holders must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. Teens must also complete Segment 2 of driver education. After holding a Level 1 license for at least six months and meeting all requirements, teens may apply for a Level 2 intermediate license.

Take the Road Test

After completing supervised driving and education requirements, schedule a driving skills test with a third-party provider approved by the SOS. Adults applying for their first license also need to take the road test unless exempted due to an out-of-state license transfer.

Be ready with the Michigan Road Test Checklist.

Apply for Your Full License

Once you pass the road test and meet all licensing conditions, return to a SOS branch to receive your full Michigan driver’s license. Bring all necessary documentation and payment for the applicable fee.
