How to Renew a Michigan Driver License

3 min read

Renewing your Michigan driver license is a process you should complete before your license expires to avoid penalties or driving restrictions. The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) offers multiple renewal methods to accommodate various needs.

When to Renew

Most standard Michigan driver licenses are valid for four years and expire on your birthday. The SOS typically sends a renewal notice about 45 days before expiration. However, it's your responsibility to track your license status.

You can renew your license up to 12 months before the expiration date. If your license has been expired for more than four years, you will need to reapply and may have to retake vision, written, and driving tests.

Renewal Methods

Online Renewal

Online renewal is the fastest and most convenient method if you meet eligibility requirements. You must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security Number on file
  • Have renewed in person at least once in the last eight years
  • Have no changes to your name or other personal details

Use the Michigan online services portal to complete the renewal and pay with a credit or debit card.

In-Person Renewal

You are required to renew in person if:

  • You are upgrading to a REAL ID-compliant license
  • Your license has been expired for more than four years
  • You need to update your name or other personal information
  • You’re 65 or older and prefer in-person assistance

Bring the following to a Michigan SOS office:

  • Current driver license or other valid ID
  • Proof of legal presence and Michigan residency (if updating info)
  • Payment for renewal fees

Find the nearest office using this list of Michigan SOS locations.

Mail Renewal

Some eligible residents, such as those temporarily out of state (military members, students, etc.), may receive a mail renewal option. Instructions will be included with your renewal notice. You’ll need to return the completed form with a check or money order.

Required Documents

If you’re renewing in person and updating information or getting a REAL ID, you’ll need to bring documents from these categories:

  • Proof of identity and legal presence
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Two documents proving Michigan residency

Refer to the Required Documents for Michigan License for detailed information.

Renewal Fees

The standard renewal fee for a non-commercial Michigan driver license is $18. Additional fees may apply for late renewals or upgrades. Learn more on the Michigan DMV Fees and Payment Options page.

REAL ID Upgrade Option

If you haven’t upgraded to a REAL ID, you can do so during your renewal. You’ll need additional documentation, such as a certified birth certificate or passport. A REAL ID will be required for boarding domestic flights and entering federal buildings starting May 7, 2025.

Address and Name Changes

If you’ve changed your address or name, update this before renewing your license:

These updates often require in-person visits and documentation.

Renewal for CDL Holders

Commercial driver license (CDL) holders must renew in person and pass a vision test. Additional requirements apply if you have endorsements. See Michigan CDL Renewal Process for more information.

Always check the official Michigan SOS website for any changes or updates to license renewal requirements.
