How to Get a Michigan Motorcycle License

3 min read

To legally operate a motorcycle on public roads in Michigan, you must have a motorcycle endorsement (CY) on your driver’s license or a motorcycle-only license. Michigan offers several paths to obtain this endorsement depending on your age, current licensing status, and whether you complete an approved training course.

Eligibility and Age Requirements

To apply for a motorcycle endorsement in Michigan:

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • If under 18, you must have a Level 2 Graduated Driver License.
  • You must complete an approved motorcycle safety course if you're under 18 or if you want to waive the skills test.

More details can be found under Michigan Driver License Eligibility.

Training and Safety Courses

Michigan’s Basic Rider Course (BRC) is provided by certified Rider Education providers and includes both classroom and on-cycle instruction. Upon successful completion, you receive a waiver for the on-road skills test.

To find a training provider, visit the Michigan Rider Education Program page on the Secretary of State (SOS) website.

Motorcycle Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP)

If you're 16 or older, you can apply for a Motorcycle TIP. It allows you to practice riding under certain restrictions, such as:

  • No riding at night
  • No passengers
  • No riding on highways

The TIP is valid for 180 days and can be renewed once. You must pass a vision screening and written knowledge test to get the TIP.

Testing Requirements

If you choose not to take the Basic Rider Course, you'll need to pass:

  1. Vision Test
  2. Written Knowledge Test — Focuses on motorcycle operation, road rules, and safety. Study tips for the Michigan Written Knowledge Test can help.
  3. On-Cycle Skills Test — Administered by a third-party examiner approved by the Michigan SOS.

Adding a Motorcycle Endorsement

Once you’ve passed the required tests or completed a safety course:

Important Rules for Motorcyclists

Motorcyclists must follow all general traffic laws, including those related to right-of-way and lane use. Brush up on Michigan Right Turn Laws and Michigan Passing and Lane Use Rules to stay compliant and safe.

Helmets are required for riders under age 21. Those 21 and older may ride without a helmet if they:

  • Have at least $20,000 in first-party medical benefits insurance, and
  • Have held the endorsement for at least 2 years or completed an approved safety course
