Michigan CDL License Requirements

3 min read

Obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Michigan is essential for individuals operating large or specialized vehicles such as semi-trucks, buses, or tankers. The process is regulated by both federal and state guidelines and involves meeting age requirements, passing medical exams, submitting proper documentation, and completing written and road skills tests.

Eligibility and Age Requirements

To apply for a Michigan CDL, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old to drive intrastate (within Michigan)
  • Be at least 21 years old for interstate driving or transporting hazardous materials
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license

In addition to age, applicants must meet Michigan’s driver license standards. For more, refer to the Michigan Driver License Eligibility resource.

Medical Certification

All CDL applicants must meet federal medical standards by providing a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT medical card). The certificate must be issued by a certified medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registry.

Required Documentation

Applicants must bring specific documents to verify identity, Social Security number, legal presence, and Michigan residency. Acceptable documents include:

  • Valid Michigan driver’s license
  • Social Security card or W-2
  • U.S. passport or birth certificate
  • Utility bill, lease agreement, or similar proof of Michigan residency

See the Required Documents for Michigan License for a full list.

CDL Testing Requirements

Michigan CDL candidates must complete both knowledge and skills tests:

Knowledge Tests

These written exams include:

  • General Knowledge
  • Air Brakes (if applicable)
  • Combination Vehicles
  • Endorsement exams for hazardous materials, passenger transport, tankers, etc.

Prepare using the Michigan CDL Written Test Preparation resource.

Skills Test

This includes:

  • Pre-trip vehicle inspection
  • Basic control skills
  • On-road driving exam

Testing must be scheduled through a third-party CDL skills testing organization approved by the Michigan Department of State.

CDL Classes and Endorsements

Michigan issues three classes of CDLs:

  • Class A: Required for operating a combination of vehicles with a GVWR over 26,001 pounds, with towed units over 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B: For single vehicles over 26,001 pounds, towing units 10,000 pounds or less.
  • Class C: For transporting hazardous materials or more than 16 passengers in a vehicle under 26,001 pounds.

Endorsements are required for specific vehicle types and cargo. Visit the Michigan CDL Endorsements Guide for details.

Disqualifications and Driving Record

A CDL can be disqualified for:

  • DUI or DWI offenses
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Using a commercial vehicle in the commission of a felony

Michigan also uses a point system to monitor driving violations. Learn how it works in the Michigan Points System Explained.

CDL Renewals and Updates

CDLs must be renewed every four years in Michigan. Renewal requires presenting identification and medical certification if applicable. Details are available at the Michigan CDL Renewal Process.

If your personal information changes, be sure to update your CDL promptly by visiting a Michigan Secretary of State office or using available online services.
