Michigan CDL Endorsements Explained

3 min read

If you hold or are pursuing a Michigan commercial driver’s license (CDL), adding endorsements lets you operate specialized vehicles or transport specific cargo. Here’s what you need to know about each endorsement type and the process to add them.

1. Endorsement Types

  • School Bus (S): Required to transport students. Beyond the basic CDL knowledge, you must pass a school bus-specific written test and a skills test in a school bus.
  • Passenger (P): For vehicles carrying 16 or more passengers. Requires written and skills tests in a passenger-type vehicle.
  • Hazardous Materials (H): For transporting hazardous materials. Requires a written test, FBI background check, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security threat assessment.
  • Tanker (N): For vehicles with liquid or gaseous tanks. Requires written test focusing on liquid surge, pressure, and safety.
  • Combination (X): A combo of Tanker and Hazardous Materials endorsement. This includes both written tests and all required checks.
  • Double/Triple Trailers (T): For pulling double or triple trailer combinations. Requires written and skills testing.
  • Air Brakes Restriction (L Removal): If you passed your CDL test without the air brake component, you might have an “L” restriction. To operate air-brake-equipped vehicles, take and pass the air brakes portion of the skills test.

2. Eligibility & Preparation

Ensure you meet all CDL requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old for intrastate, 21 for interstate travel.
  • Have valid Michigan CDL documentation and pass vision/medical exams.
  • Review required study materials, such as the Michigan CDL manual, and take practice tests. See the section on Michigan CDL written test preparation for study strategies and sample questions.

3. Testing Process

  1. Study – Read endorsement-specific chapters in the CDL manual.
  2. Written Exam – Taken at a Secretary of State office or approved testing center. A passing score is required before skills testing.
  3. Skills Test – Administered in the appropriate vehicle (bus, tanker, trailers). Schedule through the nearest office. Use the Secretary of State office locations to find testing sites.

4. Application Steps

  1. Bring your current CDL and identification to the testing office.
  2. Provide necessary documentation for hazardous materials (background checks).
  3. Submit required fees—endorsement testing fees may vary. See the DMV fees and payment options for details.
  4. Pass the written and skills tests.
  5. Have the endorsement added to your CDL license.

5. Renewal and Upgrades

  • Endorsements remain valid with your CDL unless revoked.
  • To renew your endorsement, maintain your CDL renewal—typically every 4 years, driver's medical certification, and any required renewals such as hazardous materials threat assessments. Refer to the Michigan CDL renewal process for deadlines and required steps.

6. Tips for Success

  • Practice in the actual vehicle type before tests—tanker or passenger vehicles can handle very differently.
  • For hazmat, fully understand safety procedures and placarding rules.
  • Schedule far enough ahead—some locations may have wait periods for appointments or inspections.

By following these steps and preparing diligently, you’ll successfully add endorsements to expand your CDL capabilities in Michigan. If you’d like help with any specific endorsement, let me know!
