Massachusetts REAL ID Requirements

3 min read

If you’re planning to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant license or ID starting May 7, 2025. Massachusetts residents can obtain a REAL ID through the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), provided they meet specific federal and state documentation requirements.

What Is a REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a federally compliant form of identification that meets the standards set by the REAL ID Act of 2005. It is marked with a gold star in the top right corner. After the federal enforcement deadline, standard Massachusetts driver's licenses and ID cards will no longer be accepted for boarding domestic flights or accessing secure federal facilities.

Who Needs a REAL ID?

You need a REAL ID if you:

  • Plan to fly within the U.S. using your state-issued ID
  • Want to enter federal buildings, military bases, or nuclear facilities without a passport

A REAL ID is not mandatory. A valid U.S. passport or military ID can be used instead for federal identification purposes.

How to Get a REAL ID in Massachusetts

You must apply for a REAL ID in person at an RMV Service Center. Appointments are highly recommended and can be scheduled online.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Decide if you need a REAL ID based on your travel and identification needs.
  2. Gather required documents (see below).
  3. Visit an RMV location—REAL ID cannot be obtained online.
  4. Pay the applicable fee, which is the same as a standard license or ID renewal or replacement.

Required Documents

Applicants must present the following, in original form:

  1. Proof of lawful presence in the U.S.
    Acceptable documents include:

    • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
    • Certified U.S. birth certificate
    • Permanent resident card
    • Valid foreign passport with visa and I-94
  2. Proof of Social Security Number
    Acceptable documents:

    • Social Security card
    • W-2 form
    • Pay stub with full SSN
  3. Two proofs of Massachusetts residency
    Acceptable documents:

    • Utility bill
    • Lease or mortgage statement
    • Bank or credit card statement
    • RMV-issued documents (e.g., vehicle registration)
  4. Name change documentation, if applicable
    For example:

    • Marriage certificate
    • Divorce decree
    • Court order

For a full list of acceptable documents, visit the Massachusetts RMV REAL ID page.

Important Tips

  • All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies and laminated documents are not accepted.
  • Names on all documents must match exactly or be supported by legal documentation (e.g., name change papers).
  • REAL ID is available only in person, not online or by mail.

When to Get a REAL ID

You can upgrade to a REAL ID when:

  • Your current license or ID is up for renewal
  • You need a duplicate license or ID
  • You want to upgrade early (a new fee will apply)

Plan ahead, as appointments may be limited, especially close to the federal deadline.
