How to Get a Driver’s License in Massachusetts

Getting a driver’s license in Massachusetts involves several key steps, depending on your age and prior driving experience. Whether you're a teenager, an adult applying for the first time, or a new resident, the process starts with understanding the state's requirements set by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).

Step 1: Obtain a Learner’s Permit

If you're under 18 or a first-time applicant, you must start with a learner’s permit. Applicants must be at least 16 years old. You’ll need to:

  • Pay the permit application fee

Step 2: Complete Driver Education (Under 18)

Teen applicants must complete a state-approved driver education program. This includes:

  • 30 hours of classroom instruction
  • 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training
