How to Get a Driver’s License in Massachusetts
Getting a driver’s license in Massachusetts involves several key steps, depending on your age and prior driving experience. Whether you're a teenager, an adult applying for the first time, or a new resident, the process starts with understanding the state's requirements set by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).
Step 1: Obtain a Learner’s Permit
If you're under 18 or a first-time applicant, you must start with a learner’s permit. Applicants must be at least 16 years old. You’ll need to:
- Apply online or at an RMV service center
- Provide proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security number, and Massachusetts residency
- Pay the permit application fee
- Pass a vision screening and a knowledge test
Step 2: Complete Driver Education (Under 18)
Teen applicants must complete a state-approved driver education program. This includes:
- 30 hours of classroom instruction
- 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training
- 6 hours of observing other student drivers
- A 2-hour parent/guardian class
You must also maintain your learner’s permit for at least six months and complete 40 hours of supervised driving.
Step 3: Schedule and Pass the Road Test
When eligible, you can schedule your road test. Requirements include:
- Holding a learner’s permit for the minimum required time
- Completing driver education (if applicable)
- Submitting a road test application
- Providing a vehicle in good working condition for the test
- Paying the road test and license fees
Preparation is crucial. See Massachusetts Road Test Preparation Tips for insights.
Step 4: Provide Required Documentation
To obtain your license, bring the following documents to the RMV:
- Proof of lawful presence (e.g., U.S. birth certificate or passport)
- Proof of Social Security number
- Two proofs of Massachusetts residency
Refer to Documents Needed for Massachusetts License for the full list of acceptable documents.
Step 5: Choose REAL ID or Standard License
Massachusetts offers both a standard driver’s license and a REAL ID-compliant license. REAL ID will be required for boarding domestic flights and entering federal buildings starting May 7, 2025.

Step 6: New Residents – Transfer an Out-of-State License

- Submit an out-of-state conversion application
- Provide required identification and residency documents
