Documents Needed for Massachusetts License

3 min read

Getting a driver's license in Massachusetts requires presenting specific documents to verify your identity, legal presence, Social Security status, and residency. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) uses these documents to confirm your eligibility and ensure compliance with both state and federal identification standards, including REAL ID requirements.

Identity and Lawful Presence

All applicants must present valid proof of identity and lawful presence in the U.S. Acceptable documents include:

  • A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
  • A certified U.S. birth certificate
  • A Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization
  • A valid, unexpired foreign passport with a visa and I-94

If you're applying for a REAL ID-compliant license, these documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies or laminated versions are not accepted.

Social Security Number (SSN) Verification

To verify your SSN, provide one of the following:

  • Social Security card (cannot be laminated)
  • W-2 form showing your full SSN
  • Pay stub with your full SSN
  • SSA-1099 form

If you are not eligible for an SSN, you must provide an official letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA) stating your ineligibility.

Massachusetts Residency

Proof of Massachusetts residency is required with two separate documents showing your name and residential address. Examples include:

  • Utility bill (issued within the past 60 days)
  • Lease or mortgage statement
  • Bank statement
  • Massachusetts vehicle registration or title

Post office (P.O.) boxes are not acceptable for proof of residency.

Name Change Documentation (if applicable)

If your current legal name is different from the one on your identity documents, you must also provide:

  • A marriage certificate
  • A divorce decree
  • A court-issued document for legal name change

All documents must be originals or certified copies from the issuing agency.

REAL ID vs. Standard Driver’s License

As of May 7, 2025, a REAL ID is required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. You can choose between a REAL ID or a standard license. For a REAL ID, you must provide additional documentation and visit an RMV office in person.

More information on the Massachusetts REAL ID Requirements is available if you're unsure which type of license to pursue.

Additional Considerations for First-Time Applicants

First-time applicants must also pass the required knowledge and road tests, and in some cases, present additional documentation related to legal presence or immigration status. For step-by-step application instructions, refer to How to Get a Driver’s License in Massachusetts.
