Massachusetts License Replacement Process
If your Massachusetts driver’s license has been lost, stolen, or damaged, it's essential to replace it promptly to remain compliant with state law. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) provides multiple ways to obtain a replacement, including online, in person, and by mail.
When You Need a Replacement License
You should request a replacement license if:
- Your license is lost or stolen
- Your license is damaged or unreadable
- You need to update personal information such as your name or gender
- You have a name change due to marriage or legal order
Driving without a valid license in your possession can result in fines or other penalties. If your license was stolen, it's also advisable to file a police report to prevent potential identity theft.
How to Replace Your License Online
The fastest way to replace your license is through the Massachusetts RMV Online Service Center. To qualify, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen and Massachusetts resident
- Have a valid Social Security Number on file with the RMV
- Not require a name change
- Have a REAL ID or standard license that is not suspended or revoked
You'll need to log in using your license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your SSN. A $25 replacement fee applies, and you will receive your new license by mail.
Learn more about what documentation is required by visiting Documents Needed for Massachusetts License.
In-Person Replacement at RMV Locations
If you're unable to complete the replacement online or need to update your name or photo, you can visit an RMV Service Center. Be sure to schedule an appointment through the RMV appointment portal.
Bring with you:
- Acceptable proof of identity (e.g., U.S. passport, birth certificate)
- Proof of Massachusetts residency
- Your current damaged license (if available)
- Legal documents for name or gender change, if applicable

Mail-In Replacement Option
You may be eligible to replace your license by mail if you are currently out of state, such as active military personnel or students. To request this, you must complete and mail the appropriate RMV form along with a check or money order for the fee.
Refer to Massachusetts RMV Forms You Need to Know for the latest forms and instructions.
Replacing a REAL ID
If your license was a REAL ID, you can request a duplicate with the same credential type. However, if you're upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time, you must visit an RMV office in person and provide required identification documents.
