Updating Your Address with the Massachusetts RMV

3 min read

When you move within Massachusetts or relocate to the state, it's important to notify the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) about your address change. This ensures that all official documents—including your license, vehicle registration, and RMV notifications—reach you without delay. Failing to update your address can lead to missed deadlines, penalties, and even suspension of driving privileges.

Who Needs to Update Their Address

You must notify the RMV if you:

  • Move to a new residence within Massachusetts
  • Relocate to Massachusetts from another state
  • Change your mailing address (if different from your residential address)
  • Move a vehicle to a new garaging location

Address updates apply to all holders of a Massachusetts driver's license, learner’s permit, vehicle registration, or state ID.

When to Update

Massachusetts law requires that you report your address change within 30 days of moving. This requirement helps the RMV keep accurate records and ensures you receive all critical information regarding your driving privileges and vehicle status.

How to Update Your Address

Online

The easiest and fastest way is through the RMV's Online Service Center. You’ll need:

  • Your Massachusetts driver's license or ID number
  • Last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Email address

Once submitted, your information is updated instantly.

By Phone

You can call the RMV's contact center at:

  • (857) 368-8000 from Massachusetts area codes
  • (800) 858-3926 for all other areas in the U.S.

This option is available for address changes related to both licenses and vehicle registrations.

In Person

Though not required, you may also visit an RMV service center to update your address in person. Bring a valid ID and proof of residency if you wish to update your physical documents at the same time.

Updating Physical Documents

Changing your address does not automatically issue a new license or registration card. If you want an updated card with your new address, you must order a replacement:

For New Massachusetts Residents

If you’ve recently moved from another state, you must:

  • Convert your out-of-state license to a Massachusetts license
  • Register your vehicle in Massachusetts

Both processes require proof of residency and other documentation. More details can be found here:

Important Notes

  • Address changes are valid across all RMV records, including driver's license, state ID, and vehicle registration.
  • Keep a printed or digital confirmation of your change for reference.
  • If you have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you must update your address in person and provide proof of residence.
