How to Renew a Massachusetts Driver’s License

3 min read

Renewing your Massachusetts driver’s license is a straightforward process, but it's important to follow all the steps and meet eligibility requirements to avoid delays or penalties.

When to Renew

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) typically mails a renewal notice approximately 6-8 weeks before your license expires. Licenses in Massachusetts are valid for 5 years and expire on your birthday.

You can renew your license up to 12 months before the expiration date. If it has been expired for more than 2 years, you will be required to retake the written and road tests.

Eligibility for Renewal

You are eligible to renew your license if:

  • Your license is not suspended or revoked
  • Your license is expiring within the next 12 months or expired less than 2 years ago
  • You are a Massachusetts resident
  • You meet REAL ID or Standard license documentation requirements

Renewal Methods

Online Renewal

You can renew your license online through the Massachusetts RMV Online Services. Online renewal is only available if:

  • You have a valid photo on file taken within the last 14 years
  • You do not need to update your name
  • You do not need a new photo

In-Person Renewal

Visit an RMV Service Center if you:

  • Need a new photo
  • Are applying for a REAL ID for the first time
  • Need to update your name or other personal information

Make an appointment ahead of time through the RMV appointment system to avoid long wait times.

Required Documents

For both online and in-person renewals, you’ll need:

  • Your current Massachusetts driver's license
  • Proof of address if it has changed
  • Payment for renewal fees

If upgrading to a REAL ID, you must bring documents proving:

  • Lawful presence or U.S. citizenship
  • Social Security number
  • Massachusetts residency

Refer to the REAL ID requirements and required documents list for acceptable forms.

Fees

The standard renewal fee is $50. You can check the most current fee schedule on the RMV’s official fee page.

Special Circumstances

  • Out-of-State: If you’re temporarily living outside Massachusetts, you can request an out-of-state renewal by mail. Contact the RMV directly.
  • Senior Drivers: Drivers aged 75 and older must renew in person.
  • Name Change: If your name has changed, you must update it with the Social Security Administration first and bring supporting documentation to the RMV.

Lost or Expired Licenses

If your license is lost, stolen, or expired beyond two years, follow the replacement process or prepare to retake necessary tests.
