Transfer of Out‑of‑State Registration to Missouri

3 min read

If you’ve recently moved to Missouri, transferring your vehicle registration from another state is a legal requirement. Missouri law requires new residents to title and register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. Failing to do so can result in penalties, including fines.

Residency and Eligibility

You are considered a Missouri resident for vehicle registration purposes if you live in the state, are employed here, or have children enrolled in public schools. Residency also applies to those who have declared Missouri as their home of record for tax or voting purposes.

Required Documents

When registering your out-of-state vehicle, bring the following to a Missouri license office:

  • Out-of-state title (signed over to you if applicable)
  • Completed Application for Missouri Title and License (Form 108)
  • Vehicle Inspection Certificate (if required)
  • Proof of Missouri insurance that meets the state’s liability minimums
  • Current odometer reading
  • Valid identification (e.g., Missouri driver’s license or state-issued ID)
  • Lien release if applicable
  • Payment for title and registration fees

Safety and Emissions Inspections

Missouri mandates vehicle inspections under certain conditions:

  • Safety inspection is required for vehicles more than five years old.
  • Emissions testing is only necessary if you live in the city of St. Louis or certain counties (e.g., St. Charles, Franklin, Jefferson).

Visit the Missouri Department of Revenue for details on inspection station locations and requirements.

Paying the Necessary Fees

Registration and titling fees include:

  • Title fee: $8.50
  • Processing fee: $6
  • Registration fee: Based on vehicle horsepower
  • State and local taxes: 4.225% state tax plus applicable local taxes
