Updating Your Name or Address on Missouri License
Keeping your driver’s license current with your legal name and correct address is not just important—it’s required by Missouri law. Whether you’ve recently moved or legally changed your name, the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) has clear procedures for updating your records.
Name Change on a Missouri Driver's License
If you've legally changed your name due to marriage, divorce, adoption, or court order, you must update your Missouri license in person. This must be done within 30 days of the name change.
Required Documents
To change your name on your Missouri license, bring the following to a Missouri license office:
- Your current Missouri driver's license or ID card
- Proof of the name change (such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order)
- Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. passport or birth certificate)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2)
- Proof of Missouri residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies are not accepted.
What to Expect
Once your documents are verified, you'll receive an updated license with your new name. Fees vary by license type—see Fees for Missouri Driver’s License for more information.
Address Change on a Missouri Driver's License
Missouri residents are required to notify the DOR of any address change within 30 days. This can be done online, by mail, or in person.
Online or Mail Address Change
To update your address without getting a new license:
- Submit your change online at the DOR’s official website
- Or complete the Address Change Request Form and mail it to the address provided on the form
In-Person Address Change with New License
If you want your new address to appear on your physical license, visit a Missouri license office and provide:
- Your current Missouri license
- Proof of Missouri residency with your new address
The address change fee is the same as a replacement license. For details, check Replacing Lost Missouri License or ID Card.
CDL and Address/Name Changes
Commercial drivers must follow the same procedures, but updates must also comply with federal CDL regulations. Visit Renewing a Missouri Commercial License for more on CDL-related updates.
Penalties for Failing to Update
Failure to update your name or address on your driver’s license could result in:
- Delays in receiving important notices, including license renewals or traffic citations
- Mismatched records with insurance companies or law enforcement
- Possible fines if you’re stopped and your license doesn’t match your actual residence
To stay compliant and avoid complications, always keep your license information current. You can also locate nearby offices through the Missouri DMV Office Locations Guide.
