Missouri Motorcycle Endorsement Requirements

3 min read

To legally operate a motorcycle on public roads in Missouri, you must obtain a Class M endorsement on your driver's license. This endorsement confirms that you’ve demonstrated the knowledge and skills necessary to ride safely and legally.

Who Needs a Motorcycle Endorsement?

Anyone operating a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle on Missouri roads is required by law to have a Class M endorsement or a motorcycle-only license. This includes scooters and mopeds with engines larger than 50cc.

Eligibility Requirements

You must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Hold a valid Missouri driver’s license or permit
  • Pass both a written knowledge test and an on-cycle skills test specific to motorcycles

Applicants under 18 must complete a motorcycle rider training course approved by the Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program (MMSP) and have parental consent.

Steps to Get a Missouri Motorcycle Endorsement

1. Pass the Motorcycle Knowledge Test

This test includes questions on safe riding practices, Missouri traffic laws, and motorcycle-specific regulations. Study resources include the Motorcycle Operator Manual provided by the Missouri Department of Revenue.

To prepare effectively, review our Preparing for the Missouri Written Driving Test.

2. Complete an On-Cycle Skills Test or Safety Course

Applicants can either:

  • Take the on-cycle skills test at a Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) examination station, or
  • Submit proof of completion from an MMSP-approved Basic Rider Course (BRC), which waives the skills test

3. Submit Identification and Pay Fees

You’ll need to provide:

  • A current Missouri driver’s license
  • Proof of lawful status and residency if not previously submitted
  • Completion card from BRC (if applicable)
  • Payment for applicable fees (see Fees for Missouri Driver’s License)

4. Endorsement Issuance

Once all requirements are fulfilled, the Class M endorsement is added to your license. If you're only applying for a motorcycle license (without driving privileges for other vehicles), you'll be issued a motorcycle-only license.

Special Considerations for Teen Riders

Riders aged 15½ to 16 may be eligible for a motorcycle instruction permit, but must:

  • Complete an MMSP Basic Rider Course
  • Pass the motorcycle knowledge test
  • Hold the permit for at least 182 days
  • Ride only during daylight, without passengers, and not exceed 250cc engine size

For full eligibility guidelines, see Missouri License Eligibility by Age and Requirements for Teen Learner Permits in Missouri.

Renewing or Updating Your Endorsement

Class M endorsements renew along with your regular license. If your license is up for renewal, be sure to check the Renewal Requirements for Missouri Driver’s License. For address or name changes, visit Updating Your Name or Address on Missouri License.

All Missouri motorcycle riders are required to:

  • Wear a helmet, regardless of age, unless insured and over 26 years old (with proof of coverage)
  • Follow all traffic laws and ride responsibly
