How to Convert an Out-of-State License in MS

2 min read

If you’ve recently moved to Mississippi and hold a valid driver’s license from another state, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) requires you to transfer your license within 60 days of establishing residency.

Who Needs to Transfer Their License?

Any new resident with a valid, unexpired out-of-state license must transfer it to continue driving legally in Mississippi. If your out-of-state license is expired, you may be required to take the knowledge and driving tests again.

Step-by-Step Process to Transfer Your License

1. Establish Residency in Mississippi

You must be living in Mississippi with the intent to remain. Utility bills, lease agreements, or mortgage statements can help prove residency.

2. Visit a Mississippi Driver's License Office

Transfers must be done in person. Locate your nearest office using the Mississippi DMV Locations and Service Hours page.

3. Bring the Required Documents

You will need:

  • Your valid out-of-state driver's license
  • Social Security card or acceptable proof of your SSN
  • Two documents proving Mississippi residency
  • Proof of legal presence in the U.S. (passport, birth certificate, etc.)

Refer to the complete Documents Needed for a Mississippi Driver’s License for a full list of acceptable forms.

4. Choose Between a Real ID and Standard License

Mississippi offers both Real ID-compliant and standard licenses. Real ID is federally recognized and required for boarding domestic flights and entering federal facilities. Learn more at Mississippi Real ID vs Standard License.

5. Pay the Required Fees

The standard fee for a Class R driver’s license in Mississippi is $24 for a 4-year license and $47 for an 8-year license. Visit the Mississippi DMV Fee Schedule Overview for details on all applicable fees.

Testing Requirements

Most drivers with a valid license won’t need to retake any tests. However, if your license is expired or from a foreign country, you may be required to take:

  • A vision test
  • A written knowledge test
  • A road skills test

Use the Mississippi Ultimate Road Rules Handbook to prepare if testing is needed.

Additional Notes for Teen Drivers

If you're under 18 and moving to Mississippi, you may be subject to additional requirements and must meet the state's age-based licensing stages. See Mississippi Minimum Age Requirements for Licenses for more.
