Mississippi Driving Permit Eligibility Guide

Before getting behind the wheel in Mississippi, aspiring drivers must meet specific eligibility requirements for a learner’s permit. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) outlines clear rules that govern the minimum age, required documents, and the overall process of applying for a driving permit.

Minimum Age Requirement

In Mississippi, you must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit. At this age, you're eligible to receive a limited learner’s permit, which allows driving only when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and seated in the front seat.

Applicants must be legal residents of Mississippi and provide proof of lawful status in the U.S. Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • Certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Valid U.S. passport
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

Required Documentation

When applying for a permit, bring the following documents to a Mississippi DPS office:

  • Original birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
  • Social Security card or acceptable SSN documentation

School Enrollment Verification

Applicants under the age of 18 must be enrolled in school or have completed high school or a GED. A completed school attendance form (DPS form) is mandatory and must be signed by a school official.

Minors must have a parent or legal guardian present to give written consent. This consent is usually signed at the DPS office during the application process.

Knowledge Test Requirement

Permit Validity and Renewal

A Mississippi learner's permit is valid for 2 years. If it expires before upgrading to an intermediate or full license, you must renew it according to Mississippi Permit Renewal and Extension Rules.

Driving Restrictions

While holding a learner’s permit, drivers must follow these conditions:

  • Always drive with a licensed adult age 21 or older in the front seat

Upgrading to an Intermediate License

Once you hold your learner’s permit for 12 months without any traffic violations, and you reach at least 16 years of age, you may apply for an intermediate license. A driving skills test is required at this stage.
