Mississippi Minimum Age Requirements for Licenses

3 min read

In Mississippi, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) has established specific age thresholds for various types of driver's licenses to ensure that drivers gain adequate experience and knowledge before receiving full driving privileges. Here’s a clear breakdown of the current minimum age requirements for each licensing stage.

Learner’s Permit (Age 15)

Teens may apply for a learner’s permit at age 15. This permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver aged 21 or older seated in the front passenger seat. Applicants must pass a written knowledge test, vision screening, and provide the required documents, such as proof of school attendance and identity. Intermediate License (Age 16)

At 16, teens become eligible for an intermediate license if they have held a learner’s permit for at least 12 months without violations. This license allows unsupervised driving but includes restrictions:

  • No driving between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.
  • No driving between 11:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday. These restrictions do not apply if accompanied by a parent, guardian, or designated adult.

Regular Class R License (Age 17)

A full, unrestricted Class R license becomes available at age 17. Applicants must have held an intermediate license for at least 6 months and remain violation-free during that period. The road test must be passed to obtain this license. Applicants must also submit all required identity and residency documents, which can be found in the list of required documents.

Out-of-State Transfer Minimum Age

Drivers moving to Mississippi with an out-of-state license must meet the same age requirements. For example, a 17-year-old with a valid out-of-state license may receive a Class R Mississippi license after providing proof of residency and passing a vision test. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Mississippi follows a gradual, tiered licensing system to ensure young drivers gain experience before full driving privileges. Adhering to these age requirements not only keeps drivers compliant but also contributes to safer roads for everyone.
