Mississippi Permit Renewal and Extension Rules

3 min read

Mississippi learner’s permits come with specific expiration periods, renewal rules, and limited options for extensions. It’s essential for permit holders to understand how to maintain their legal driving status and avoid gaps in eligibility, especially for those transitioning toward a full driver’s license.

Learner’s Permit Validity and Expiration

In Mississippi, a learner’s permit—officially known as an Instruction Permit—is valid for two years from the date of issuance. The permit is available to drivers at least 15 years old and serves as a prerequisite for scheduling a road test.

Permits must be valid on the day of the road test, so drivers approaching expiration should renew in advance if they haven't yet taken the test.

For eligibility details, see Mississippi Driving Permit Eligibility Guide.

Renewal Process

If your learner’s permit expires, Mississippi law allows you to renew it once. This renewal provides another two-year window to continue practicing driving under supervision.

To renew your permit, you must:

  • Visit a local Mississippi Driver Services Bureau (DSB) location in person
  • Present valid identification and the expired permit
  • Pay the required fee (typically around $7.00, though subject to change)

A vision test may be required again at the time of renewal. You do not have to retake the written knowledge test unless your permit has been expired for over five years.

You can check the documentation you’ll need by visiting Documents Needed for a Mississippi Driver’s License.

Permit Extension Options

Unlike renewals, extensions of Mississippi learner permits are not automatically granted. However, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) may allow limited extensions under specific circumstances, such as:

  • Military deployment
  • Medical conditions
  • Family emergencies
  • Pandemic-related DMV closures

If you believe you qualify for an extension, contact the DPS directly at https://www.driverservicebureau.dps.ms.gov or visit your nearest office to file a formal request.

Age and Permit Transition Considerations

Permit holders who turn 17 or older may be eligible to move directly to a regular license, provided they meet testing and experience criteria. If you obtained a permit at 15 and it expires before turning 17, it’s typically advisable to renew and maintain continuous permit status to avoid delays in license progression.

Important Notes

  • Permit renewal is limited to one time only.
  • Expired permits over five years may require retesting.
  • Driving with an expired permit is illegal and may result in citations.
  • Schedule your road test well in advance if your permit is nearing expiration.
