Mississippi Real ID vs Standard License
Mississippi offers two types of driver's licenses: the Real ID and the standard license. Understanding the differences between these two can help residents choose the one that best fits their needs, especially with federal identification requirements in place.
What Is a Real ID?
The Real ID is a federally compliant form of identification that meets the requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005. This legislation was enacted to enhance security and standardize ID requirements across all states. As of May 7, 2025, a Real ID or another acceptable federal form of identification (such as a passport) is required to:
- Board domestic flights
- Enter federal buildings
- Access certain military bases
A Mississippi Real ID is marked with a gold star in the upper right corner.
Standard License: What It Covers
A standard Mississippi driver’s license allows you to drive legally within the state and across the U.S. It is valid for identification purposes in most non-federal situations but does not meet federal Real ID standards. This means it won’t be accepted for boarding domestic flights or accessing federal facilities after May 7, 2025.
Key Differences Between Real ID and Standard License
| Feature | Real ID | Standard License | |-------------------------------|------------------------------------------|--------------------------------------| | Federal Compliance | Yes | No | | Accepted for Air Travel | Yes (domestic, TSA-approved) | No | | Federal Building Access | Yes | No | | Gold Star Mark | Yes | No | | Required Documents | Additional documents required | Fewer documents needed |
For a full list of required documents for a Real ID, refer to Documents Needed for a Mississippi Driver’s License.
Documents Needed for a Real ID
To obtain a Real ID, Mississippi residents must visit a local DPS office and provide:
- Proof of identity (e.g., valid U.S. passport or birth certificate)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., SSN card or W-2)
- Two proofs of Mississippi residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
These documents must be originals or certified copies.
How to Upgrade to a Real ID
If you currently have a standard Mississippi license, you can upgrade to a Real ID at any time before renewal. This process requires an in-person visit. For those moving from another state, follow the How to Convert an Out-of-State License in MS resource for specific steps.
Do You Need a Real ID?
Consider your travel and identification needs. If you plan to:
- Fly domestically
- Visit military installations or secure federal facilities
...then a Real ID is strongly recommended. Otherwise, if you have a valid passport or don't need federal access, a standard license may suffice.
For new drivers, understanding eligibility is also important—refer to Mississippi Minimum Age Requirements for Licenses for age-related criteria.
DMV Locations and Services
Not all Mississippi DMV locations issue Real IDs, so it’s best to check ahead. Visit Mississippi DMV Locations and Service Hours to find a participating office near you.
