How to Register a Vehicle in Michigan
Vehicle registration in Michigan is managed by the Michigan Department of State (commonly referred to as the Secretary of State or SOS). Whether you're registering a new purchase or transferring ownership, completing this process correctly ensures your vehicle is legally authorized for use on Michigan roads.
Who Needs to Register
If you own and operate a vehicle in Michigan, it must be registered with the Michigan SOS. This includes newly purchased vehicles, used vehicles transferred between individuals, and vehicles moving into Michigan from out of state.
First-Time Registration
If you just purchased a vehicle from a dealership, they will typically handle the registration and titling for you. For private party sales, you must visit a Michigan SOS office.
Steps to Register:
- Obtain the Vehicle Title – Ensure the title is signed by both buyer and seller. For used cars, verify the odometer reading and confirm there are no liens.
- Proof of Insurance – Michigan requires no-fault insurance. Present valid insurance that meets state minimum coverage requirements.
- Complete an Application – Fill out the Application for Title and Registration (Form RD-108).
- Present Identification – You must show a valid Michigan driver’s license or ID. Required Documents for Michigan License outlines acceptable ID options.
- Pay Applicable Fees – Registration fees are based on vehicle type, age, and weight. Review Michigan DMV Fees and Payment Options for full details.
Registration for Out-of-State Vehicles
If you move to Michigan with an out-of-state vehicle, you must register it within 30 days of establishing residency.
You will need:
- Out-of-state title or proof of ownership
- Valid Michigan auto insurance
- Michigan driver's license
- Completed registration application
- Payment for taxes and fees
Temporary Registration Permits
While awaiting your permanent plates, you may apply for a 30-day temporary registration permit. This allows you to drive the vehicle legally in the interim. See Michigan Temporary Registration Permits for eligibility.
Renewing Registration
Registrations must be renewed annually. You will receive a renewal notice in the mail, or you can sign up for email alerts. Renewals can be done:
- Online via Michigan DMV Services Available Online
- In-person at an SOS office
- By mail
Titling and Registering Together
Michigan requires that titling and registration occur simultaneously. This is especially important for new purchases or vehicle ownership transfers. For step-by-step information, refer to Michigan Title and Registration Transfer Guide.
