Requirements for a Massachusetts Motorcycle Permit

3 min read

Riding a motorcycle in Massachusetts starts with securing a motorcycle learner’s permit. The permit allows new riders to legally practice operating a motorcycle on public roads while learning the skills necessary for safe riding.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a Massachusetts motorcycle permit, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Hold a valid Class D driver’s license or learner’s permit, or apply for both simultaneously.
  • Pass a vision test and a knowledge test specific to motorcycles.

If you're under 18, you’ll also need parental or guardian consent and must complete the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) before being eligible for a full motorcycle license.

Application Process

You can apply for your motorcycle permit online at the Massachusetts RMV website or in person at an RMV Service Center.

Here's what you need:

  • A completed Class M Permit Application.
  • Proof of identity, residency, and lawful presence, as detailed on the Documents Needed for Massachusetts License.
  • Payment of the $30 permit fee.

After your application is submitted and your documents are verified, you will need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test.

The Motorcycle Knowledge Test

This multiple-choice test covers:

  • Safe riding practices
  • Motorcycle laws in Massachusetts
  • Basic motorcycle control and operation
  • Alcohol and drug effects on riding

To prepare, review the Massachusetts Motorcycle Manual and consider using the Massachusetts Permit Test Study Guide as well as the Free Massachusetts DMV Practice Tests.

Permit Restrictions

Once you obtain your motorcycle permit, the following restrictions apply:

  • No riding after sunset or before sunrise.
  • No passengers allowed.
  • Must wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection at all times.
  • Cannot ride out of state unless the state recognizes the Massachusetts motorcycle permit.

Violating these restrictions may lead to fines, points on your driving record, or revocation of your permit.

Upgrading to a Full Motorcycle License

After holding your permit for at least six months (if under 18) or demonstrating adequate proficiency, you can apply for a full Class M motorcycle license. Most applicants complete the Massachusetts Rider Education Program, which includes classroom instruction and hands-on riding experience. Successful completion often waives the road test.

More details are available in the How to Get a Massachusetts Motorcycle License article.

It's important to understand how the motorcycle permit fits into the larger licensing structure. If you're just starting, you may want to refer to How to Apply for a Massachusetts Learner’s Permit and How to Get a Driver’s License in Massachusetts.

Safe riding habits are critical. Always follow local traffic rules, and stay informed about Massachusetts Speed Limit Laws and Massachusetts DUI Laws and Penalties, which apply equally to motorcyclists.
