How to Get a Massachusetts Motorcycle License

Riding a motorcycle in Massachusetts legally requires a Class M license. Whether you're a first-time rider or transitioning from another license class, the process involves several key steps administered by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). Here's everything you need to know.

Step 1: Obtain a Motorcycle Learner’s Permit

Before applying for a motorcycle license, you must get a motorcycle learner’s permit. To be eligible, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts driver's license or pass a vision screening and learner’s permit exam.
  • Provide proper identification documents.

You'll need to study the Massachusetts Motorcycle Manual and pass a written knowledge test. The permit allows you to practice riding but comes with restrictions—you can't ride at night, carry passengers, or ride without a helmet.

Although not mandatory for adults, the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) offers a Basic Rider Course that is highly recommended. It covers riding skills, safety strategies, and laws. Completing the course waives the road test for applicants 18 and older and improves your confidence on the road.
