How to Get a Massachusetts Motorcycle License
Riding a motorcycle in Massachusetts legally requires a Class M license. Whether you're a first-time rider or transitioning from another license class, the process involves several key steps administered by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). Here's everything you need to know.
Step 1: Obtain a Motorcycle Learner’s Permit
Before applying for a motorcycle license, you must get a motorcycle learner’s permit. To be eligible, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Hold a valid Massachusetts driver's license or pass a vision screening and learner’s permit exam.
- Provide proper identification documents.
You'll need to study the Massachusetts Motorcycle Manual and pass a written knowledge test. The permit allows you to practice riding but comes with restrictions—you can't ride at night, carry passengers, or ride without a helmet.

Step 2: Complete a Basic Rider Course (Optional but Recommended)
Although not mandatory for adults, the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) offers a Basic Rider Course that is highly recommended. It covers riding skills, safety strategies, and laws. Completing the course waives the road test for applicants 18 and older and improves your confidence on the road.
You can find approved training schools on the Massachusetts RMV website.
Step 3: Schedule and Pass the Motorcycle Road Test
If you do not take the MREP Basic Rider Course, you must pass the RMV’s Class M road test. Requirements include:
- Holding your permit for at least 6 months if under 18.
- Scheduling a test online or by phone.
- Providing a registered and insured motorcycle for the exam.
Minors must also comply with Massachusetts Junior Operator License Rules, including completing a driver's education program and having parental consent.
Step 4: Apply for Your Class M License
Once you pass the road test or complete the Basic Rider Course, you can apply for your full Class M license. You must:
- Pay the required license fee (refer to Massachusetts DMV Fees).
- Provide required documents, which are detailed in the Documents Needed for Massachusetts License) resource.
- Update your REAL ID credentials if applicable (Massachusetts REAL ID Requirements).
The license will be mailed to you within 7–10 business days.
Important Safety and Legal Reminders
Motorcyclists in Massachusetts must always wear DOT-approved helmets and follow all traffic laws, including:
- Respecting posted speed limits (Massachusetts Speed Limit Laws).
- Yielding and merging properly (Right of Way Rules in Massachusetts).

By meeting all requirements and practicing responsible riding, you can enjoy the freedom and fun of motorcycling in Massachusetts while staying safe and legal.
