Maine CDL Endorsements & Vision Requirements
Commercial drivers in Maine must meet specific requirements to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). These include vision standards, medical certifications, and appropriate endorsements depending on the type of vehicle or cargo involved.
CDL Endorsements in Maine
Endorsements allow CDL holders to operate specialized vehicles or transport specific types of cargo. To earn an endorsement, applicants must pass additional knowledge and/or skills tests. The following are the main endorsements available in Maine:
- H (Hazardous Materials): Requires a TSA background check and a written test. Fingerprinting is also mandatory.
- N (Tank Vehicles): For drivers who haul liquid or gaseous materials in tanks.
- P (Passenger Transport): Necessary for driving vehicles with 16 or more passengers.
- S (School Bus): Requires both the P endorsement and a separate skills test related to school bus operation.
- T (Double/Triple Trailers): For operating combination vehicles with more than one trailer.
- X (Combination of Tank and Hazardous Materials): Combines the N and H endorsements.
Applicants must already possess a Maine CDL or be in the process of applying for one to pursue these endorsements. Refer to What You Need to Get a Commercial CDL in Maine for baseline CDL requirements.
Medical and Vision Requirements
Maine CDL applicants must meet federal and state medical and vision standards, which are verified through a DOT Medical Examination and a vision screening:
Vision Standards
To qualify for a CDL, drivers must meet the following minimum visual acuity standards with or without corrective lenses:
- At least 20/40 vision in each eye
- A field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian
- The ability to recognize red, green, and amber colors
These standards are in line with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) guidelines. Vision screenings are conducted during the initial application and may be required during renewal. More information is available at Maine’s Vision Test Rules for License Renewals.
Medical Certification
All CDL applicants must provide a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Medical Card) completed by an FMCSA-certified medical examiner. Drivers must carry this certification and submit it to the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
Failing to maintain a valid medical certification can result in a CDL downgrade to a non-commercial status.
Applying for an Endorsement
Drivers can add endorsements by scheduling knowledge and/or skills tests at a local BMV. Learn how to do this at How to Schedule a Road Test at Maine BMV.
The following documents are typically required:
- Valid Maine CDL
- Proof of citizenship or lawful presence
- Medical Examiner’s Certificate
- Endorsement-specific documents (e.g., TSA approval for hazardous materials)
Fees vary by endorsement and test requirements. For detailed fee information, see Maine DMV Fees & Forms for Duplicate Documents.
Additional Tips for CDL Holders
Renewal procedures, including vision and medical re-evaluation, are important for staying compliant. CDL drivers should be aware of updates at When to Renew Your Maine License with Dates, Fees and Vision Test Information. Older drivers should also consult Maine Senior Drivers Renewal and Vision Requirements for age-specific policies.
Staying informed and maintaining proper documentation ensures continued eligibility to operate commercial vehicles in Maine and beyond.
