How to Schedule a Road Test at Maine BMV

3 min read

Scheduling a road test with the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is an essential step toward obtaining your driver's license. This process varies depending on your age and whether you are part of the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. Here's how to schedule your driving test and what to expect.

Eligibility Requirements

Before you can schedule a road test, you must meet certain criteria:

  • Hold a valid Maine learner's permit
  • Meet the minimum age and training requirements
  • Have completed any mandatory waiting periods or driver education

If you're a teen driver, you’ll need to comply with the Maine Graduated Licensing Program, which includes a minimum of 70 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.

Booking Your Road Test

You can schedule your road test in Maine by:

  • Online: Visit the official BMV appointment system and log in with your permit information.
  • By Phone: Call the BMV at (207) 624-9000, ext. 52119 during business hours.
  • By Mail: Complete the road test request form included with your learner’s permit and send it to the address on the form.

Appointments fill quickly, especially in spring and summer, so schedule as early as possible.

Required Documents

Bring the following items to your road test:

  • Learner's permit
  • Appointment confirmation (printed or digital)
  • Completed driving log if under 18
  • Valid registration and insurance for the test vehicle
  • Parent or guardian if under 18

Vehicle Requirements

The vehicle used for your road test must:

  • Be legally registered and insured
  • Have a valid inspection sticker
  • Be in good working order (lights, brakes, signals, horn, etc.)

If the vehicle doesn’t pass the pre-test inspection, the test will be canceled.

Test Day Tips

On the day of the test:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early
  • Make sure the driver accompanying you has a valid license
  • Stay calm and follow the examiner’s instructions

After the Test

If you pass, the examiner will give you a temporary license, and your official license will arrive by mail. If you fail, you'll need to reschedule and may have to wait before taking the test again.
