3 min read

If you're 15 years old and ready to start driving in Maine, you’ll need to go through the state's graduated licensing system beginning with a learner permit. Here's a detailed look at the steps, requirements, and what to expect.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a Maine learner permit at 15, you must first complete an approved driver education course. This course must include 30 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and successful completion of a final exam. Driver education is mandatory for all Maine permit applicants under 18.

Required Documents

When you’re ready to apply, bring the following items to your local BMV office:

  • Proof of completion of a Maine-approved driver education course
  • Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate
  • Social Security Number or acceptable proof of ineligibility
  • Two documents showing Maine residency
  • A completed application form

How to Apply

Visit a Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) location. It’s recommended to make an appointment if available. You will need to:

  1. Submit your documents and application.
  2. Pass a vision screening test.
  3. Take and pass a written knowledge exam.

Knowledge Test Overview

The written knowledge test will assess your understanding of Maine’s traffic laws, signs, and safe driving practices. You can prepare by studying the Maine Motorist Handbook and using practice tests.

Vision Screening

All applicants must pass a vision test. The minimum standard is 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses. Details on Maine's requirements can be found at Maine’s Vision Test Rules for License Renewals.

After You Get Your Permit

Once you receive your learner permit, you must follow these rules:

  • You may only drive under the supervision of a licensed driver at least 20 years old with two years of driving experience.
  • No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • No use of mobile or handheld electronic devices while driving.

The permit is valid for two years. Before applying for a road test and intermediate license, you must complete at least 70 hours of driving practice, including 10 hours at night.
