When to Renew Your Maine License with Dates, Fees and Vision Test Information

3 min read

Renewing your Maine driver's license on time ensures you stay legally eligible to drive and avoid penalties. Here's a breakdown of when and how to renew, the costs involved, and vision test requirements.

License Renewal Timeline in Maine

Maine driver’s licenses are valid for six years and expire on the license holder’s birthday. Renewal notices are typically sent by mail or email about 45 days before expiration. You can renew up to 6 months before the expiration date.

For drivers 65 and older, the license is valid for 4 years instead of 6. Special vision test rules also apply for these drivers—more on that below.

If your license is expired for more than 5 years, you’ll be required to retake both the written and road tests.

Renewal Methods: Online vs. In Person

Maine offers two main renewal options:

  • Online Renewal: Available at the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles website. You’ll need your current license and Social Security Number.
  • In-Person Renewal: Required if you’re renewing a Real ID license, if your last renewal was online, or if you need to update a photo or pass a vision test.

Fees for Maine License Renewal

As of 2025, the standard renewal fees are:

  • Under 65: $30 for a 6-year license
  • 65 and older: $20 for a 4-year license
  • REAL ID upgrade during renewal: Additional $5

Vision Test Requirements

Maine requires vision screening at renewal under certain conditions:

  • Every in-person renewal after age 40 must include a vision test.
  • Drivers age 62 and older must pass a vision test at every renewal.
  • You can use a vision screening performed by your eye doctor within the past 24 months—submit the completed MVE-103 Vision Form to the BMV.

Additional Notes for Real ID Holders

If you plan to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities, you’ll need a Real ID after May 7, 2025. You can upgrade during your renewal if you bring the required documents.
