How to Upgrade to a Maine Real ID Driver License

3 min read

If you're planning to fly domestically or enter federal facilities after May 7, 2025, you'll need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another federally accepted form of identification. Maine residents can upgrade their current standard license to a REAL ID at any Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) office. Here's everything you need to know to make the process smooth and successful.

What Is a REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a federal standard for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards, established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. REAL ID-compliant licenses have a star in the upper right-hand corner and meet enhanced security standards required for boarding commercial aircraft and accessing certain federal facilities.

Who Needs a REAL ID?

You’ll need a REAL ID if you plan to:

  • Fly on commercial airlines within the U.S. without a passport
  • Enter secure federal buildings (like military bases or nuclear power plants)

A REAL ID is optional—you can still use your passport, passport card, or other TSA-approved documents instead.

Eligibility Requirements

To upgrade to a Maine REAL ID, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawfully present noncitizen
  • Have a valid Maine driver’s license or state-issued ID
  • Present required original or certified documents for identity, legal presence, Social Security, and Maine residency

Required Documents

You must bring original or certified copies of the following documents:

  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or
  • Certified U.S. birth certificate or
  • Certificate of Naturalization

2. Proof of Social Security Number

  • Social Security card
  • W-2 form
  • Pay stub with full SSN

3. Two Proofs of Maine Residency

  • Utility bills
  • Lease or mortgage statements
  • Bank statements
  • Maine vehicle registration

For more details on acceptable documents, visit the Maine BMV REAL ID page.

How to Upgrade

You must visit a BMV office in person to upgrade to a REAL ID. The process cannot be done online.

Steps:

  1. Gather all original/certified documents.
  2. Visit a Maine BMV office.
  3. Pay the fee (same as a regular license renewal or replacement).
  4. Have your photo taken.
  5. Receive a temporary paper license; your REAL ID will arrive by mail.

Appointments are optional but can reduce wait times—see best times to visit.

Fees

The fees for upgrading to a REAL ID are the same as for renewing or replacing a standard license:

  • $30 for a 6-year license (under 65)
  • $20 for a 4-year license (age 65 and over)

Visit Maine DMV fees & forms for a full breakdown.

When to Upgrade

You can upgrade your license at any time, but most people do it during renewal. Be sure to consider timing if you need to fly after May 2025. For guidance, see license renewal dates and vision requirements.

If you're a senior driver, also review renewal and vision rules.
