Updating Your Address on a Louisiana License
Louisiana law requires residents to update their address on their driver’s license within 10 days of moving. This applies whether you’re relocating within the state or coming in from another state. Keeping your address current ensures you receive vital communications from the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) and remain compliant with state regulations.
Methods to Update Your Address
You can update your address through three main methods: online, by mail, or in person.
Online Address Change
Most Louisiana drivers can update their address online through the Louisiana OMV's official site. To use the online option, you must:
- Have a valid Louisiana driver’s license
- Provide your full name, license number, date of birth, and Social Security Number (last four digits)
- Pay a small fee if requesting a new license with the updated address
Your new address will be updated in the OMV system immediately. However, if you want a new physical license with the new address, you must request and pay for a replacement card.
By Mail
You may also update your address by mail. Send a signed, written request that includes your full name, driver’s license number, old and new addresses, and a copy of your current license to:
Office of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 64886
Baton Rouge, LA 70896
This method is useful for residents temporarily out of state or unable to visit a local office.
In Person
If you prefer or need to visit in person, head to your nearest OMV location. Bring your current driver’s license and proof of the new address, such as a utility bill or lease agreement. Some offices may require an appointment, so it's wise to check Louisiana DMV wait times beforehand.
Do You Need a New Physical License?
Changing your address does not automatically generate a new license. If you want one with the updated address, you must order a duplicate. This can be done during the address change process online or in person. A fee applies, and your new license will be mailed to your updated address.
Address Change for Vehicle Registration
Updating your driver’s license address does not automatically update your vehicle registration. To change your address for vehicle records, you’ll need to complete that separately through the OMV.
Who Must Update Their Address?
Everyone holding a Louisiana driver’s license is legally required to keep their address current. This includes:
- Full-time residents who move within Louisiana
- New residents moving to Louisiana from out-of-state (after applying as a new resident)
- College students and military personnel establishing temporary residence
