Applying as a New Resident in Louisiana
If you've recently moved to Louisiana, there are several important steps you must take to become a legal driver in the state. The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) requires all new residents to obtain a Louisiana driver’s license and register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency.
Establishing Residency
You’re considered a Louisiana resident if you:
- Register to vote in the state
- Enroll your children in a public school
- File a Louisiana state income tax return
- Live in the state for more than 90 days
Once residency is established, the 30-day window to complete license and registration begins.
Getting a Louisiana Driver’s License
To apply for a driver’s license as a new resident, you must visit a local OMV office in person. Bring the following documentation:
- One primary proof of identity, such as a valid passport or birth certificate
- Social Security card or W-2 with full SSN
- Two proofs of Louisiana residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)

If you already hold a valid out-of-state license, you typically won't need to take a written or road test unless the license is expired. However, you must surrender your previous license upon issuance of your Louisiana one.

- Proof of insurance (must meet Louisiana minimum coverage)
- Completed Vehicle Application (DPSMV 1799)
- Proof of residency
