Applying as a New Resident in Louisiana

3 min read

If you've recently moved to Louisiana, there are several important steps you must take to become a legal driver in the state. The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) requires all new residents to obtain a Louisiana driver’s license and register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency.

Establishing Residency

You’re considered a Louisiana resident if you:

  • Register to vote in the state
  • Enroll your children in a public school
  • File a Louisiana state income tax return
  • Live in the state for more than 90 days

Once residency is established, the 30-day window to complete license and registration begins.

Getting a Louisiana Driver’s License

To apply for a driver’s license as a new resident, you must visit a local OMV office in person. Bring the following documentation:

  • One primary proof of identity, such as a valid passport or birth certificate
  • Social Security card or W-2 with full SSN
  • Two proofs of Louisiana residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)

If you already hold a valid out-of-state license, you typically won't need to take a written or road test unless the license is expired. However, you must surrender your previous license upon issuance of your Louisiana one.

Vehicle Registration Requirements

You also need to register any out-of-state vehicles within 30 days. Registration must be done in person at an OMV office. Required documents include:

  • Current out-of-state title and registration
  • Proof of insurance (must meet Louisiana minimum coverage)
  • Completed Vehicle Application (DPSMV 1799)
  • Proof of residency
  • Odometer disclosure (for vehicles less than 10 years old)

Vehicle Inspection and Insurance

Before registration is complete, your vehicle must pass a safety inspection at a certified inspection station. You’ll receive an inspection sticker once your vehicle meets state standards.

Louisiana also mandates liability insurance with at least:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury per person
  • $30,000 per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage
