Commercial drivers in Louisiana are required to obtain specific endorsements and adhere to certain restrictions based on the type of vehicle they operate and the cargo they transport. These endorsements expand a CDL’s applicability, while restrictions limit it under specific conditions.

Common CDL Endorsements in Louisiana

To transport specialized cargo or operate specific vehicle types, commercial drivers must pass additional knowledge and/or skills tests. Louisiana recognizes the following key endorsements:

  • H – Hazardous Materials (Hazmat): Required for drivers transporting hazardous materials. Applicants must undergo a TSA background check and pass a written exam.
  • N – Tank Vehicles: Needed for vehicles transporting liquid or gaseous materials in tanks. A written test is required.
  • P – Passenger Transport: Necessary for operating vehicles that carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver. Requires both written and skills tests.
  • S – School Bus: Required in addition to the P endorsement to operate a school bus. Applicants must clear a background check and pass specialized exams.
  • T – Double/Triple Trailers: For operating double or triple trailers. Only a written test is needed.
  • X – Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials: Combines H and N endorsements.

CDL Restrictions in Louisiana

Restrictions are applied when a driver is either not qualified or not tested for certain CDL requirements. Common restrictions include:

  • L – Air Brakes Restriction: Placed on a CDL if the driver either fails the air brake knowledge test or is tested on a vehicle without air brakes.
  • E – Manual Transmission Restriction: Applied when a skills test is taken in a vehicle with an automatic transmission.
  • K – Intrastate Only: Limits driving to within Louisiana borders, usually due to age or medical conditions.
  • Z – No Full Air Brake Equipped CMV: Indicates the driver was tested in a vehicle with partial air brakes.
  • M and N – Class B or C Passenger Vehicle Restriction: Applied based on the type of passenger vehicle used during testing.

Removing Restrictions

To remove most restrictions, drivers must retake the appropriate tests using a qualifying vehicle. For example, to lift the air brake restriction, the driver must pass both the air brake knowledge test and a skills test in a vehicle with full air brakes.
