What to Do if You Lose Your Louisiana License

3 min read

Losing your Louisiana driver’s license can be stressful, but the state has made the replacement process relatively straightforward. Whether your license is lost, stolen, or damaged, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) offers several methods for obtaining a duplicate.

Immediate Steps to Take

If your license was stolen, consider reporting it to local law enforcement. This isn’t required by the OMV but can protect you from identity theft or misuse of your credentials. Once you’re ready to replace it, you have two primary options:

  • Online Replacement
  • In-Person Visit to an OMV Office

Online License Replacement

Most Louisiana drivers are eligible to request a duplicate license online through the LA OMV website. You must meet the following requirements:

  • Your last license was issued within the past 4 years.
  • You have not changed your address since your last issuance.
  • Your license is not suspended or revoked.

The fee is typically $13, and the license will be mailed to your address on file. Allow 7–10 business days for delivery.

In-Person Replacement

If you're not eligible for online replacement or prefer to visit an office, you can get a replacement license in person at any OMV location. Be sure to bring:

  • One primary identity document (such as a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate)
  • One secondary identity document (such as a Social Security card, school ID, or utility bill)
  • Proof of residency if your address has changed

Replacement fees are similar to online requests and can be paid by cash, check, or card, depending on the office. Use the Louisiana DMV Fee Breakdown to verify current pricing.

If You're Out of State

If you're temporarily outside Louisiana, you may still request a duplicate by mail. Contact the OMV at 225-925-6146 or email [email protected] to request the appropriate form and instructions.

Avoid Delays and Future Losses

To reduce the chances of license loss in the future:

  • Keep a digital photo of your license (not a valid substitute, but helps with reporting).
  • Store it in a secure but accessible location.
  • Update your address when moving using Updating Your Address on a Louisiana License.

Acting promptly after losing your license ensures your identity is protected and that you remain legally allowed to drive in Louisiana.
