Updating Your Address with the Hawaii DMV
Hawaii law requires drivers and vehicle owners to update their address with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 30 days of moving. This ensures you receive important notifications such as renewal notices, traffic citations, and vehicle registration details without delay.
Who Needs to Update Their Address
You must update your address with the Hawaii DMV if you:
- Move to a new residence within the state
- Change your mailing address
- Move from one Hawaiian island to another
- Relocate to Hawaii from another state (in which case, also refer to the Steps to Obtain a Hawaii Driver's License)
Methods to Update Your Address
Online
You can update your address online through the official county DMV website, provided you have a valid Hawaii driver’s license or state ID. Online updates are available for most counties, including:
- Honolulu: honolulu.gov/csd
- Maui: mauicounty.gov
- Hawaii (Big Island): hawaiicounty.gov
- Kauai: kauai.gov
Not all counties may offer this service online for vehicle registration changes, so double-check local guidelines.
In Person
Visit your local DMV office to submit the address change. You may be required to fill out a change of address form and provide valid ID. Some locations may also allow you to update both your license and registration records at the same time.

By Mail
Some counties accept mailed address change requests. You must include:
- A completed address change form (if required)
- A copy of your Hawaii driver’s license or state ID
- Your signature
Contact your county DMV for mailing addresses and specific instructions.
What Changes When You Update Your Address
Updating your address affects:
- Driver’s License/State ID: The new address will be recorded in the DMV database but won’t appear on the physical card unless you request a replacement.
- Vehicle Registration: New address will reflect in DMV records, and future documents will be mailed to your updated location.
To update your license or ID card with the new address printed on it, apply for a replacement card and pay applicable fees. More on this can be found in the Hawaii DMV Fees Breakdown.
Required Information
Be ready to provide:
- Full name
- Driver’s license or state ID number
- Old and new addresses
- Vehicle plate number (if updating registration)
- Email or phone number (optional but helpful for contact)
If you’re updating both your license and vehicle registration, ensure your name matches exactly across all documents.
Fees
Changing your address in DMV records is typically free. However, ordering a replacement driver’s license, ID card, or vehicle registration certificate will incur fees. You can view and pay these online in many cases using the Paying DMV Fees Online in Hawaii portal.
Special Notes
- If you’re applying for a Hawaii REAL ID, your address must match across all identity documents.
- If you’ve legally changed your name due to marriage, divorce, or other reasons, follow the Name Change Procedures for Hawaii DMV Records.
- Keep a printed or digital copy of your change confirmation for your records.
