Hawaii CDL Endorsements Explained

3 min read

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsements in Hawaii allow drivers to operate specialized types of commercial vehicles or transport specific cargo. These endorsements expand your driving privileges beyond the standard CDL classifications (Class A, B, and C). If you're planning to drive vehicles such as school buses, tankers, or those carrying hazardous materials, you'll need the appropriate endorsement on your CDL.

Overview of Hawaii CDL Endorsements

In Hawaii, the following endorsements are available:

  • H – Hazardous Materials (HazMat): Required to transport hazardous materials as defined by federal law.
  • N – Tank Vehicles: Needed to operate a vehicle designed to transport liquid or gaseous materials in bulk.
  • P – Passenger Transport: Required for vehicles designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver.
  • S – School Bus: Mandated for drivers of school buses and requires both the P endorsement and additional training.
  • T – Double/Triple Trailers: Necessary for pulling double or triple trailers (only applicable with a Class A CDL).
  • X – Tanker + HazMat: Combines the N and H endorsements for transporting hazardous liquids or gases.

Each endorsement has its own set of written knowledge tests and, in some cases, a skills test.

How to Obtain a CDL Endorsement in Hawaii

To obtain a CDL endorsement in Hawaii:

  1. Hold a valid Hawaii CDL or CDL permit.
  2. Pass the written knowledge test specific to the endorsement.
  3. Pass a background check, particularly for the HazMat (H) endorsement.
  4. Complete additional training and testing, such as road or skills tests for endorsements like the S (School Bus).
  5. Pay applicable fees based on the endorsement type and renewal cycle.

Federal and TSA Requirements for HazMat Endorsement

The Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement has stricter federal requirements. Applicants must:

  • Submit to a TSA security threat assessment.
  • Provide fingerprints.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Have a clean driving and criminal record in relation to hazmat transport.

You can begin the TSA application at the official Universal Enrollment Services website.

Endorsement-Specific Training and Testing

  • Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements require a road test in the appropriate vehicle.
  • School Bus (S) applicants must also complete specific training per Hawaii Department of Education regulations.
  • Double/Triple Trailers (T) endorsement requires knowledge of vehicle combinations and safe towing practices.
  • Tank (N) endorsement focuses on vehicle stability and liquid surge awareness.

Before taking your test, be sure to review the CDL manual and prepare using Preparing for the Hawaii CDL Knowledge Test.

Renewal and Endorsement Validity

Endorsements remain valid as long as your CDL is valid, but some may require periodic renewal or re-testing. For example, HazMat endorsement holders must retake the TSA background check every five years.
