Hawaii REAL ID Compliance Guide

Hawaii residents planning to travel domestically by air or enter certain federal facilities will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card beginning May 7, 2025. The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, sets minimum security standards for state-issued identification documents. Hawaii is fully compliant with these federal requirements, and residents have the option to upgrade their license or ID card accordingly.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets increased federal security standards. It is marked with a gold star in a circle on the top right corner. Without a REAL ID (or another acceptable form of identification such as a passport), you will not be able to:

  • Board federally regulated commercial aircraft
  • Enter nuclear power plants
  • Access certain federal buildings

Who Needs a REAL ID?

REAL ID is optional in Hawaii, but highly recommended if you plan to travel domestically without a passport. You do not need a REAL ID to:

  • Vote
  • Drive
  • Access hospitals
  • Apply for or receive federal benefits like Social Security

How to Get a REAL ID in Hawaii

To obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card, you must visit a Hawaii DMV office in person. You will need to bring original or certified documents that prove your:

  1. Legal name and date of birth
  2. Social Security Number
  3. Lawful status in the U.S.
  4. Hawaii residency (2 documents required)

Acceptable Documents for REAL ID

To verify your identity and eligibility, bring the following:

  • Proof of identity: Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Proof of Social Security Number: Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with full SSN
  • Proof of lawful status: U.S. birth certificate or valid immigration documents
  • Proof of Hawaii residency: Utility bills, lease agreements, or bank statements with your name and residential address (must provide two)

Fees for REAL ID

There is no additional fee for upgrading to a REAL ID-compliant card if you’re renewing your license or ID. However, if you upgrade before your regular renewal period, you may have to pay a duplicate license fee. Fee schedules can be found in the Hawaii DMV Fees Breakdown.

When Should You Apply?

Apply for a REAL ID well before the May 7, 2025 deadline to avoid long wait times. It’s best to combine your upgrade with a renewal if possible. If your license expires after the deadline, you may still travel with another TSA-approved ID, such as a passport.
